Teen Pregnancy Imagine it - Clicking through all the channels on television to find something that would strike any american’s interest. Young looking girls on the television are talking about their lives, and the issues they hold. The show is called Teen Mom. How could such vibrant young ladies have so much responsibility at this age? Why would they take on this role of motherhood when they themselves still depend on the assistance of their own parental figures? Shockingly, adolescent children becoming parents is not uncommon in america. In fact, the United States has the highest adolescent pregnancy rate of any industrialized country. With 7% of female adolescents aged 15-19 years old becoming pregnant annually, (Mckelvey, 2012) it is†¦show more content†¦This topic, in particular, is not being addressed enough by our American society. More educational programs should be used to teach both teens and adults about teen pregnancy and the consequences that come accordingly. Latinas should also be a main focus when trying to do so. Teens should be able to easily access valid information about adolescent motherhood through schools, outside programs, parents, and any other trusted source. Technology such as apps can have an effect on teens when helping to remind them of contraceptive use. One program that has joined the effort in preventing young adult pregnancy is the Healthy Families America (HFA) intervention program. HFA is a home visiting program that has continuously helped to reduce the amount of adolescent mothers with harsh parenting behaviors or those who act inappropriately while pregnant or raising a child. An estimated 20% to 37% of adolescent mothers have a subsequent birth within 2 years of their first child, (Lewis, 1862) and HFA interventions help to stop this event from taking place. Actions such as these where the mother treats her child inadequately, or acts carelessly around them, can ultimately result in that child taking part in risky behaviors themselves.
